Whether it’s a busy manufacturing plant, a high-output food processing facility, or a large distribution warehouse, factory floors are some of the hardest-working surfaces in any industry. One of the most important — yet often unseen — elements of a durable, safe, and efficient factory floor is the screed.
Screeding provides a level, stable, and robust base for the final floor finish. In industrial environments where heavy machinery, high traffic, and strict safety standards are the norm, getting this stage right is critical.
Why Screeding Matters in Factories
1. Heavy Loads and Continuous Use
Factories often operate around the clock, with forklifts, pallet trucks, and heavy equipment placing constant stress on the flooring. A poorly screeded base can lead to cracks, uneven surfaces, or premature floor failure — all of which disrupt operations and create hazards.
2. Safety and Compliance
A smooth, properly levelled screed ensures the final floor surface meets safety standards, helping reduce trip risks and supporting compliance with workplace regulations.
3. Durability Under Pressure
Industrial floors must withstand not just weight, but also vibrations, chemical exposure, and impact. The right screed mix provides long-term stability and prevents structural damage beneath the floor finish.
4. Efficient Maintenance and Hygiene
In sectors like food or pharmaceutical manufacturing, hygiene is paramount. A level screed allows for seamless finishes that are easier to clean, reducing dirt traps and supporting sanitation requirements.
Popular Screeding Types for Industrial Environments
Heavy-Duty Sand & Cement Screed – Extremely robust, ideal for supporting high loads and frequent traffic.
Polymer-Modified Screeds – Enhanced strength and chemical resistance, perfect for environments exposed to oils, solvents, or cleaning agents.
Fast-Drying Industrial Screeds – Minimise downtime during refurbishment or repairs, allowing faster return to full operations.
Liquid Screeds (Flow Screed) – Excellent for large, open spaces, offering self-levelling properties and a smooth finish ready for specialist coatings.
Summary
A well-screeded factory floor may be hidden beneath layers of industrial coatings or tiles, but it is the foundation that keeps operations running smoothly. By ensuring strength, levelness, and durability from the ground up, screeding plays a vital role in both safety and productivity in any factory setting.

Floor screeding commenced following consultation with the client and their design team. Interior Screed Group were then instructed to install to the ground floor, 1200g damp proof membrane with a 500g separating layer together with an 85mm thick C40 ultra-rapid drying fibre reinforced floor screed.
Utilising sand and cement floor screed we provided the contractor with the flexibility to to create micro falls therefore enabling us to easily marry up shop and rear entrance thresholds ensuring final floor finishes fitted perfectly.
