Whether it’s a bustling dog boarding kennel, an active daycare centre, or a specialist veterinary boarding facility, animal care environments are high-traffic, high-demand spaces where floors must perform under constant pressure. One of the most important — yet often overlooked — elements of any successful kennel fit-out is the screed.
Screeding provides a smooth, stable, and durable base for your final floor finish. In spaces where hygiene, safety, and comfort for animals are critical, getting this stage right is essential.
Why Screeding Matters in Boarding Kennels
1. Constant Movement and Activity
From excitable arrivals to daily play sessions, kennel floors endure heavy paw traffic, sudden bursts of energy, and the occasional zoomie. A poorly screeded floor can lead to uneven surfaces, cracks, or premature floor failure — all of which compromise safety for both dogs and staff.
2. Hygiene and Cleanliness
A level screed ensures the final flooring can be properly sealed, leaving no gaps where dirt, hair, or bacteria could accumulate. This makes daily cleaning and disinfecting more efficient, helping maintain strict hygiene standards.
3. Drainage and Slip Resistance
Well-applied screeds can incorporate gentle falls and slopes for effective drainage in wash-down areas. This helps manage spills, reduces standing water, and minimises the risk of slips for dogs and handlers alike.
4. Comfort Under Paw
A quality screed creates an even base that supports specialist kennel flooring. This means fewer lumps, bumps, or sharp transitions — ensuring a safer, more comfortable surface for dogs to walk, run, and rest on.
Popular Screeding Types for Kennel Environments
Fibre-Reinforced Sand & Cement Screed – Impact-resistant and ideal for areas with high activity and cleaning demands.
Polymer-Modified Screeds – Extra strength and moisture resistance, perfect for wet zones and frequent wash-downs.
Liquid Screeds (Flow Screed) – Self-levelling and excellent for creating large, even areas quickly, with the option to integrate underfloor heating for additional canine comfort.
Summary
A well-screeded kennel floor might be hidden beneath the final finish, but its impact is felt in every safe step, every easy clean, and every comfortable paw-print. For boarding kennels where animals, staff, and cleaning routines move quickly, getting the floor foundation right isn’t just important — it’s essential.
