When it comes to constructing or renovating a school or university science block, every stage of the process matters. One of the most overlooked—but most important—steps is screeding. This essential construction practice creates the smooth, level base needed for durable floors, safe movement, and a professional finish that can withstand the demands of a busy learning environment.
Why Screeding is Vital in a Science Block
Durability and Safety
Floors in labs and classrooms must withstand constant foot traffic, heavy benches, and potential chemical spills. A properly screeded floor ensures a solid, crack-free surface that supports long-term use.Level Surfaces for Equipment
Scientific instruments and lab setups often require perfectly level work areas. Screeding guarantees that the foundation is even, reducing risks of accidents or inaccurate results from uneven surfaces.Hygiene and Cleanliness
Smooth floors are easier to clean, which is critical in environments where spills or residues may occur. Screeding eliminates dips and cracks where dirt or liquids might collect.Professional Finish
A well-screeded floor gives a polished look to the science block, reflecting the institution’s commitment to high-quality facilities.
The Screeding Process in a School Science Block
Preparation
- The subfloor is cleaned and inspected.
- Any debris, dust, or oil is removed to ensure proper bonding.
Setting Levels
- Guides or “screed rails” are placed to mark the correct height and slope.
- In science blocks, slight slopes may be required for drainage in certain lab areas.
Mixing and Laying
- The screed mixture is prepared, often using sand, cement, and water in the right ratios.
- It is poured, spread, and compacted carefully across the floor area.
Levelling and Finishing
- Using straight edges or mechanical tools, the surface is levelled to perfection.
- The screed is then left to cure, ensuring maximum strength before the final flooring is applied.
Benefits to Students and Staff
A screeded science block doesn’t just benefit the building—it benefits the people inside. Students can learn in a safe, professional environment, while staff can confidently use equipment and maintain cleanliness with ease. Ultimately, this creates a learning atmosphere that supports focus, creativity, and innovation.

Floor screeding commenced following consultation with the client and their design team. Interior Screed Group were then instructed to install to the ground floor, 1200g damp proof membrane with a 500g separating layer together with an 85mm thick C40 ultra-rapid drying fibre reinforced floor screed.
Utilising sand and cement floor screed we provided the contractor with the flexibility to to create micro falls therefore enabling us to easily marry up shop and rear entrance thresholds ensuring final floor finishes fitted perfectly.
