Project Overview
Interior Screed Group were appointed directly by a homeowner to install a traditional sand & cement screed to a contemporary, self-build, rear extension in Nottingham.
The client required an SR level internal floor ready for large-format tiles, tying in neatly with the new external patio.
We installed 73m² of 50mm sand & cement screed using Tarmac Ultra Pro, sand/cement screed to create a strong, durable base.
Scope of Work
- Surveyed and set levels across 73m² of new extension slab.
- Check DPM, Insulation and Sub-base condition prior to screeding.
- Install perimeter edge insulation to isolate the screed from walls and thresholds.
- Lay 50mm (floating) sand & cement screed using Tarmac Ultra Pro (batched externally).
- Hand-screed to tight tolerances suitable for large-format tiles and full-width glazing.
- Finish to a smooth, closed surface and protect during curing.
Challenges
- Limited build-up – 50mm max. The architect specified a maximum 50mm screed depth to keep the internal floor flush with the new patio and door thresholds, leaving little margin for error.
- Restricted rear access. Materials and equipment had to be brought through a side access without disturbing existing landscaping and garden areas.
- Feature glazing & natural light. With full-width sliding doors and rooflights, any unevenness in the floor would be magnified once the final tiles were installed.
Our Solution
Choosing Tarmac Ultra Pro. We used Tarmac Ultra Pro for its high early strength, low shrinkage and excellent workability – ideal for a thinner, high-performance 50mm screed.
Accurate level control. We set datums to the finished patio and door thresholds, then worked in bays using aluminium straightedges and frequent laser level checks to maintain consistent levels across all 73m².
Careful material handling. Factory batched sand and cement were staged at the front, then moved cleanly through the side access with protective coverings laid to keep the client’s property tidy.
Quality-driven finish. The screed was compacted, ruled off and trowelled to a smooth, closed finish, with extra attention around door tracks and perimeter edges for crisp lines and easy tiling.
Results
