Project Type: Residential Extension
Depth: 70mm
System: Traditional Sand & Cement Screed
Delivered By: Interior Screed Group
Project Overview
Interior Screed Group installed a 70mm ready-mixed sand & cement screed, delivering a strong, durable and level subfloor across a single-room residential extension.
Off-site mixing (externally batched) ensured full control over consistency, workability, and finish quality.
Benefits of Traditional Sand & Cement vs Liquid Screed
No Laitance Layer
Liquid screed naturally forms a laitance layer that must be sanded off—adding cost, dust, machinery, and delays.
Sand & cement doesn’t produce laitance, meaning:
- No sanding or grinding
- Faster handover and quicker drying
- No expensive follow on products such as levellers and costly adhesives
Stronger Edge & Point Load Strength
Sand & cement provides superior robustness around:
- Thresholds
- Doorways
- Edges
- Areas with concentrated loads (kitchens, islands, furniture)
Liquid screeds can be more fragile at edges unless carefully detailed.
Better for Variable Depths
Traditional screed can be easily adjusted on-site to build up or to reduce depths last minute.
Liquid screed is far less forgiving and usually requires consistent levels throughout.
No Risk of Pipe Float (Where UFH Exists)
If UFH is present, sand & cement locks pipes firmly in place.
Liquid screed can cause pipe float if prep isn’t perfect.
Time-consuming and labour intensive preparation (forming a sealed tank) not required
Outcome
The installed screed delivered a solid, durable and perfectly level finish with none of the aftercare, sanding, or prep associated with liquid screeds.
A clean, controlled, high-strength installation—ready for final floor finishes without delays.
