Floor Screeding Questions

Screeding is the process of applying a well-blended mixture of cement and sand (or other materials) over a concrete subfloor to create a smooth, level surface suitable for final floor finishes.

Traditional screed is either manually blended (via forced action mixer) or mixed at external batching plant. Traditional screed is generally stronger and more versatile than liquid screed handling heavy loads with ease. Unlike liquid screed, precise on-site adjustments can be made when using traditional sand and cement screeds. Offering better, more predictable drying compared to liquid screed, traditional screeds are ready to receive floor finishes without the need for extra treatments such as laitance removal, sanding or grinding of the screeded surface saving time and extra cost.

It depends on the type of screed used. Traditional sand and cement screeds typically cure much quicker than liquid screeds. By selecting a product from our fast-drying screed range, application of light foot traffic can be applied in as little as 12 hours with installation of your final floor finishes in just 5 days. Unlike liquid screed, which often requires extended drying periods and additional processes such as laitance removal, sand and cement screed reaches a workable state faster and without extra preparation. This results in shorter overall timelines, fewer delays, less cost, and a smoother, more streamlined construction process.

Preparation & Aftercare

We will advise you on all necessary preparations during our extensive pre-contracts process. Our pre-contracts stage is designed to ensure absolute clarity and confidence before any work begins. We carry out a thorough assessment of every project, reviewing drawings, specifications, site conditions, and screed performance requirements in fine detail. This process allows us to identify risks early and recommend the most suitable screed system for long term durability and performance. Investing heavily in this stage ensures our clients receive a precise plan, clear expectations, and a seamless floor screeding installation.

Yes, we can offer a complete underfloor heating and screed package. With extensive experience delivering underfloor heating and floor screeding systems across all project scales – from single new build homes to full housing estates we offer a complete insulation, underfloor heating and floor screed package. Choosing our team for insulation, underfloor heating and floor screeding means total control. Perfect coordination is our goal. One team means accountability for quality, with no delays, no trade clashes, just a seamless process and flawless, high-performance system.

Final flooring should only be installed once the screed has fully cured, and its moisture levels fall within the manufacturers specified tolerances. Installing flooring too early can trap residual moisture, leading to eventual floor failure, lifting, or long-term screed damage. For complete assurance, and especially on fast-track projects whereby installation of the floor finishes is time-limited we always recommend a professional moisture test – such as a hygrometer or CM test before any finish is laid. This confirms the screed is truly ready, protects your investment, and ensures the final floor performs exactly as it should.

Costs & Quotes

Prices vary depending on the type of screed, the size of the area and the complexity of the installation. A typical cost for 65mm traditional screed with an area of 100m2 would be around £18.00 per m2 with accelerated/modified screeds costing more. Every project is unique, so accurate pricing can on be provided once we understand the full scope of work. To ensure complete clarity and transparency, we offer free, no-obligation quotations that are fully tailored to your projects exact requirements allowing you to receive precise, reliable pricing with no hidden costs and a clear understanding of what’s involved.
